I scratch build each People’s Amp, one-at-a-time.  Amplifiers are not always on hand, so it might take up to 5 weeks for you to receive your amplifier.  I will stay in touch with you during the entire process.  I also offer a limited lifetime warranty, which means if you ever need it repaired, I’ll do it for free (within reason)

The People's Amplifier
The People's Amp

The People’s Amp is based on the legendary Marshall 1974, often referred to as the “Bluesbreaker Jr” or the Marshall 18 Watt.  It is not a clone.  It has an EZ81 tube rectifier, which gives you that nice vintage “sag.” The People’s Amp uses a 12AX7 pre-amp, another 12AX7 for its phase inverter, and a pair of EL84’s push-pulling in the power section.  It is an 8 ohm head that sounds great through your favorite cabinet.  It is a versatile amplifier, with a clean sound that could be used for jazz or some nice chicken pickin’.  Dial in a little more volume, and it starts to give a nice bluesy crunch, and when it’s wide open, there’s plenty of saucy power tube saturation for all your rock cravings.  It behaves very well with your favorite pedals.  Even though it’s only 18 watts, it’s plenty loud.  Head cabinets available in black, red, green, or blue, with matching chickenhead knobs.  If you’d like another color, just ask.

18 Watts of Pure Tube Power to the People

The People’s Amp is designed to be an affordable alternative to high-priced “boutique” amplifiers.

What matters is that your amp sounds and feels great.  Why pay more for extras you don’t really need?

There’s alot of “voodoo” in the amplifier industry.  Make sure you understand what you’re buying!  I won’t charge you more because of such things as:

“Handwired” - If an amp isn’t made in a factory it’s going to be handwired.  It makes sense that any handmade product is more expensive than something made in a factory, but isn’t it pretty obvious that a handmade amp would be  handwired?

“Point-to-Point” - It definitely looks cooler than a printed circuit board.  It’s probably more durable, and definitely easier to service.  But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a reason to pay more.

The People’s Amp is handwired, point-to-point*,  on a glass-epoxy turret board.

“Fancy-Schmancy Brand-Name Components” - Really?  Are you sure they sound better?  Especially that power transformer?

“Teflon Coated Wire” - Sure, teflon’s pretty strong stuff,  so it’s not going to melt with a soldering iron.  But If you think your amp is going to sound better because there’s teflon on the wires, maybe you should pay a few grand for it.

The People’s Amp uses reasonably-priced, quality components, including transformers by Hammond.  I sometimes use teflon coated wire.  I’m not going to tell you that you should pay more for these things, and I’m not going to upholster the cabinet in fine Corinthian Leather, either.

*Some folks say “true” point-to-point uses no board at all.  I’m not one of those folks.  The term commonly refers to circuits that don’t use printed circuit boards.

I keep the price low by making one amp and only one amp.  One input, a tone knob and a volume knob. That’s it - no channel switching, no octal tubes, no reverb, no tremolo, no tonestack.  No custom builds.  I can build them quickly because I’m keeping it simple.  If you’ve got this kind of tone, you don’t need all the bells and whistles.

Last time I checked, a boutique is where your mama goes to buy a hat.
