The People’s Amp is designed to be an affordable alternative to high-priced “boutique” amplifiers.
What matters is that your amp sounds and feels great. Why pay more for extras you don’t really need?
There’s alot of “voodoo” in the amplifier industry. Make sure you understand what you’re buying! I won’t charge you more because of such things as:
“Handwired” - If an amp isn’t made in a factory it’s going to be handwired. It makes sense that any handmade product is more expensive than something made in a factory, but isn’t it pretty obvious that a handmade amp would be handwired?
“Point-to-Point” - It definitely looks cooler than a printed circuit board. It’s probably more durable, and definitely easier to service. But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a reason to pay more.
The People’s Amp is handwired, point-to-point*, on a glass-epoxy turret board.
“Fancy-Schmancy Brand-Name Components” - Really? Are you sure they sound better? Especially that power transformer?
“Teflon Coated Wire” - Sure, teflon’s pretty strong stuff, so it’s not going to melt with a soldering iron. But If you think your amp is going to sound better because there’s teflon on the wires, maybe you should pay a few grand for it.
The People’s Amp uses reasonably-priced, quality components, including transformers by Hammond. I sometimes use teflon coated wire. I’m not going to tell you that you should pay more for these things, and I’m not going to upholster the cabinet in fine Corinthian Leather, either.
*Some folks say “true” point-to-point uses no board at all. I’m not one of those folks. The term commonly refers to circuits that don’t use printed circuit boards.
